ABOUT DOMAINES ROLLAN DE BY
Leader of the Crus Bourgeois production, Domaines Rollan de By is one of the most significant properties in the Medoc region, located not far from the Atlantic Ocean and close to the Estuary of the Gironde. Started with only a few acres by Jean Guyon, who has the strongest ambition to create pleasant wines, Domaines Rollan de By is now a 200 hectare vineyard that is famous for the quality of its wines. Robert Parker and Wine Spectator often describe the wines from Domaines Rollan de By as being great values.
Just like Jean Guyon, the wines from the estate have a very strong personality, based on the roundness of Merlot associated with Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate balances respecting the local environment while also embracing modern technologies that further enhance these exceptional wines.
The Domaines Rollan de By implements the same techniques as the Grand Crus do, sometimes pushed to the extreme. The maturity of grapes, the extraction of flavors and the ageing are wonderfully monitored. Thanks to the creative, skilled and passionate team, the estate pursues the idea of a new kind of viticulture, and is sustainably farmed.
All year long, the Domaines Rollan de By performs environment-friendly jobs: leaf-plucking and shoot thinning, green harvesting, laying a permanent or punctual vineyard cover crop, creating large canopy area to allow good aeration, sustainable treatments and amendments. The whole winery is also equipped with solar panel.
On gravelly soil, combined with sand and clay sub-layers, the vines have their roots deep into the arid soil. The Domaines implemented a rational way of culture that respects the environment as much as possible and return to traditional viticulture without excluding new technologies when they provide quality benefits. A minutious daily care is given to the maintenance and development of the vineyard.
"ALWAYS AMONG THE FINEST WINES OF THE MEDOC" - ROBERT PARKER
Created in 1995, Chateau Haut Condissas is a special prestige reserve of the best parcels. During blind tastings, Haut Condissas often ranks very well, and sometimes even in front of renowned Grand Crus.
While Chateau Haut Condissas is considered to be one of the gems of the Médoc appellation, Jean Guyon likes to talk about it as "haute couture". By deploying maximum effort on a small vineyard to achieve the quality of the best grands crus, the vineyard is cultivated as a garden, and attention is paid to each foot and each bunch. The vineyard is 37 acres on a clayey limestone hilltop terroir, and the vines are 40 years old with an average density of 10,000 vines per acre.
Grapes are handpicked, collected in small crates and sorted manually in the cellar. After cold pre-fermentation and long maceration in new oak barrels on fine lees, malolactic fermentation and lees stirring in 100% new oak barrels with regular bâtonnage during 3 months are performed. Followed by 18 months aged in new oak barrels (100% French oak).
"VERY GOOD FRUIT-DRIVEN WINES THAT REPRESENT EXCELLENT VALUE" - ROBERT PARKER
Tour Séran castle, formerly owned by the Marquis de Ségur and bought in 2000 by Jean Guyon, is a beautiful property of 20 hectares located on gravel and clay-limestone ridges bordering the Gironde near By and reminiscent of lands of Pauillac. Its vineyard is judiciously planted with a third of Cabernet Sauvignon, a third of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
Add to that ideal climate conditions by the exposure along the river that protects the vine from spring frosts, the high average age of the vines (40 years) allow the wines to express a particular personality.
Tour Serán has often been selected for Air France Business Class, and was selected by the famous Michelin-star awarded chef, Joel Robuchon, for all his 22 worldwide restaurants.
"AMONG THE BORDEAUX BARGAINS" - WINE SPECTATOR
Château Rollan de By was ranked 49th in one of the blind tastings by the Grand Jury Européen, before many First Growths in Bordeaux. Benefiting from an inimitable combination of soil, climate and topography, Château Rollan de By regularly returns to the forefront of wines of the appellation and has been selected blind for Air France Business Class every year since 2006.
Sitting on 52ha (128 acres) of clayey-chalky soils dating from the quaternary era, the vines are 35 years old on average with a density of 6,500 to 10,000 plants per hectare. Grapes are mostly handpicked and sorted manually in the cellar. Followed by malolactic fermentation and lees stirring in barrels with regular bâtonnage during 3 months, the wines are then aged 18 months in tanks and oak barrels (95% French oak and 15% American oak).
"ONE OF THE BEST CRU BOURGEOIS YOU CAN BUY" - WINE ADVOCATE
Located in the Médoc hamlet of Begadan, north of St. Estèphe, Château Greysac was built in the 1700s. Classified as Médoc Cru Bourgeois, Greysac has been a member of the elite Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux since 1982.
This 95 hectare estate can be found on gravelly soils around the village of By. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Merlot (38%), with Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%), the average age of vines is 35 years old. Wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks and cement tanks, before aging in oak barrels for 12 months.
Its full-bodied, well-structured wines are synonymous with classic Bordeaux. The Château’s characteristic style is indeed one of great aromatic finesse, combined with precise, sumptuous fruit flavors that develop in elegance and complexity over time.
Greysac has been selected by United Airline first class, Delta Airlines Business Class, Thai Airlines, Japan Airlines, and All Nippon Airways.
